Toy Story 3 Ending Technical Analysis:
Camera angles,
movement & position:
At the beginning of
the scene the director initially uses a forward tracking motion to highlight
and reveal the scenario showing the instantaneous danger and peril on the conveyor
belt. This is automatically followed by a zoom in onto Lotso (a protagonist)
showing their initial reaction upon realisation, this is further exaggerated by
the high and low angles showing the scenario has major dominance over the
character which is now very vulnerable. The mood quickly chances with a sub POV
shot revealing a possible way out to the characters this is then further
supported with vertical tracking upon Lotso climbing the ladder and at the peak
of hope a high angle is shown with Lotso being the one in power further leading
onto Lotso abandoning the remaining characters.
The following Reverse Tracking brings back the
idea of danger by exaggerating scenario movement and the danger is then
completely reinstated with a re-establishing shot again showing the danger the
characters are in, this is quickly supported with a POV shot highly revealing
the imminent danger that lies ahead. A focus pull then gives us an insight on
their thoughts and feelings of two individual character however in one shot,
this is shown with Jessie and Buzz leading in to a shot-reverse-shot
highlighting the connection between the two characters and furthermore the
initial acceptance of the imminent threat with a close up of the two characters
joining hands this is then followed by a series of angles matching the same
action. The acceptance is then established with the final protagonist (Woody),
using a match on action technique by using two different angles the film can be
cut for seamless editing fabricating their acceptance and finalised when Buzz
(another protagonist) reaching out to Woody creating an effect that all of the
characters are now in acceptance of inevitable problem. Reaction shots closely
follow giving the final thoughts and actions of the characters making the
audience feel sympathetic, the final shot individually highlighting a
protagonist where the scenario quickly changes, shown with the support of other
factors, a sub POV shot shows the crane appearing from above which then picks
up the characters and is lifted with a Crane shot showing the free flowing
movement as they are lifted into the air. A focus pull firstly focuses on an
overview of the situation the characters were just in however pulls onto Woody
which then the character turns away showing an overcome of what just happened.
Once the characters are released two shot’s are used on the relationships
within the characters (Buzz and Jessie, Mr and Mrs Potato Head) allowing them
to show their emotions to one another. It then cuts to a horizontal tracking
shot of Lotso in attempt of sneaking away to make the audience feel like they
are there with the character so when the truck shortly comes along we can feel
a sense of victory over the protagonist which is further expressed with an over
the shoulder shot at a high angle showing this character has been overcome
Finally it ends with a Reverse track-Zoom in showing us the situation this
character is now in and expressing the truck movement, Lotso is tied to the front of the truck with
other ‘Toys’ where they make a comment the Protagonist is not fond of and we
are able to see his reaction due to the directors choice of a zoom.
